Container Tracking

What is Container Tracking?

Container tracking is a system that allows for the real-time monitoring of shipping containers as they move through the supply chain. This system typically relies on technology such as GPS, radio frequency identification (RFID), and satellite communications to track containers as they are transported by truck, train, or ship.

To provide these data, a container will pass through several key points during its transit which is recorded and notified: gate out empty, gate in full, loaded, vessel departure, vessel arrival, container unloaded, gate out full, and the gate is empty.

By tracking containers throughout their journey, container tracking systems can provide valuable information about the container’s location, condition, and status, including estimated arrival times, possible delays, and any potential security risks. This information is particularly important for the maritime industry, where timely and efficient delivery of cargo is crucial. By enabling better management of container logistics, container tracking systems can help to reduce costs, optimize shipping routes, ensure compliance with customs and regulatory requirements, and improve overall supply chain efficiency. In addition to the benefits for industry, container tracking can also play a crucial role in enhancing the safety and security of maritime transportation. By providing real-time data on container movements, authorities can quickly identify and respond to any potential security threats, such as illegal smuggling or piracy.

Container tracking systems are widely used in the maritime industry, where they have become an essential tool for managing the movement of goods across the globe. They are also used in other industries, such as air cargo and trucking, where the tracking of containers and other types of cargo is necessary for efficient operations.
